A Life of Wandering Skies and Salt Spray Born in Liverpool to John and Charlotte, George Lothian Hall possessed a spirit that seemed destined to wander far beyond the borders of the United Kingdom. His early years were shaped by an education at Rugby and Brasenose College, Oxford, yet the quiet halls of academia could not contain his curiosity for the wider world. In his youth, he found himself in Gibraltar, perhaps serving as a soldie
r or a junior subaltern attached to the 48th Regiment. It was during these formative years, around 1843 and 1844, that he began to capture the rugged essence of the Rock through watercolor, pen, and ink. These early sketches of the South Barracks and the view from Algeciras reveal a young man observing the world with a sharp, attentive eye.
