In this installation, 3000 mounted species are on display - and yet it is a mere shadow of the variety of Nature. The rich colours and variation in shapes and species make the biodiversity wall a highlight of the Museum für Naturkunde in Berlin. The number of currently existing species is, of course, much higher and estimated to lie between 4 and 1 million-millions (= billion or trillion, depending on usage in your country, 10 to the power of 12). Only a fraction of currently living species is known: About 1.8 million animal and plant species have so far been scientifically described, recorded and named. New species are constantly discovered and documented - many of them by scientists of the museum. For each new species, a reference specimen must be deposited in a scientific collection so that researchers all over the world can look it up. The Museum für Naturkunde stores tens of thousands such reference specimens, known as type specimens, in its collections and makes them available to researchers all over the world. You can experience the famous biodiversity wall in several exhibits:1. A Virtual Reality story of diversity and its loss (contains both English and German version, approximate viewing time: 5 min.).2. Biodiversity 24 / 3000 / 8 Million – 24 examples from the 3000 species in the wall (approximate viewing time: 25 min., abbreviate by sampling only some species!).3. A Tagged Biodiversity Wall, with a zoomable gigapixel panorama containing the names of selected specimens and groups (approximate viewing time: 4 min. – plus any amount of time to explore the names).

      Autoriaus biografija

      The Alchemist of Ancient Echoes

In the quiet, hallowed halls of the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin, where the weight of deep time rests heavily upon the air, the work of Antje Dittmann unfolds like a rediscovered manuscript. A German paleontologist and master of mass spectrometry, Dittmann does not merely study the past; she breathes life into it through the precision of molecular biology. Her journey began far from the clinical glow of laboratories, rooted in the rugged geological landscapes of Brandenburg and Saxony Anhalt. As a child, wandering through ancient formations, she developed an intimate connection to the tangible remnants of prehistoric life, a formative experience that would later evolve into a sophisticated scientific pursuit. This early reverence for the earth’s layers instilled in her a profound understanding that every fossil is not just a stone, but a vessel of biological memory waiting to be decoded.

Dittmann’s academic evolution reflects a seamless bridge between the macroscopic grandeur of geology and the microscopic intricacies of life sciences. Her studies at Humboldt University Berlin allowed her to grasp the vital interdependence of these disciplines, a foundation that she later solidified with a doctorate from Tübingen University. Specializing in vertebrate paleontology, she mastered the art of reading evolutionary history through bone and sinew. However, it was her decision to look beyond the visible structure of fossils—to peer into the very chemical signatures left behind—that would define her scientific legacy. By integrating cutting-edge mass spectrometry with traditional paleontological methods, she transformed the study of extinction from a descriptive science into an analytical exploration of physiology and metabolic pathways.

      Decoding the Molecular Past

The true brilliance of Dittmann’s work lies in her ability to utilize proteomics to reconstruct the unseen. Her groundbreaking investigations into the Tendaguru dinosaur fossils of Tanzania serve as a testament to this innovative spirit. Where others saw only the calcified remains of giants, Dittmann sought the elusive protein fragments trapped within the mineralized matrix. Through the meticulous application of mass spectrometry, she has provided unprecedented insights into the biological functions of extinct creatures, challenging long-held assumptions about dinosaur metabolism and musculature. Her research does more than identify species; it reconstructs the very mechanics of movement and interaction, allowing us to visualize the rhythmic breathing and powerful strides of animals that vanished millions of years ago.

This scientific rigor is matched by her role as a visionary communicator of Earth’s ancient narrative. She possesses a rare ability to translate the complex language of molecular biology into stories that resonate with the public imagination. Her contributions are visible not only in academic journals but also in the immersive exhibits of the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin, where she helps curate the dialogue between humanity and the prehistoric world. Whether examining the colossal presence of a Brachiosaurus or the delicate evolutionary transitions found in the museum's collections, Dittmann’s work ensures that the secrets held within stone are accessible to all who seek to understand our planet's magnificent, unfolding tapestry.

      A Legacy of Discovery

The significance of Antje Dittmann’s career extends far beyond the laboratory bench. She stands at a pivotal moment in paleontological history, where the boundaries between biology, chemistry, and geology are dissolving to reveal a more holistic view of life on Earth. Her achievements have fundamentally altered our comprehension of dinosaur biology, moving the field toward a future where the chemical ghosts of the past can be summoned with scientific certainty. Through her dedication to both discovery and dissemination, she ensures that the profound mysteries of biodiversity—from the smallest protein fragment to the largest mounted skeleton—continue to inspire awe and wonder in the modern age.
