Michelangelo’s (Michelangelo Buonarroti, 1475–1564) “Moses” is one of the sculpture copies of the comprehensive plaster cast collection of the Foreign Art Department of the Latvian National Museum of Art. The historical collection of more than 300 plaster casts combine copies from various art periods. Most of the works in the collection represent ancient Egyptian, ancient Greek and Roman, as well as Renaissance sculpture. The prophet is portrayed sitting on a chair or throne, holding two stone tablets with the 10 Commandments under his right arm. He may, possibly, have been portrayed at the moment after receiving the commandments from God, when having descended Mount Sinai, he saw that his people were worshipping false idols. In accordance with tradition, two small horns are portrayed on the prophet’s head – the symbol of divine radiance and a mistake in the translation of the Old Testament.
