It was here that he received foundational training from the renowned ceramist and educator, Vivika Heino, whose influence would be pivotal throughout his career.

Military Service and Leadership at Chouinard

Bacerra’s education was briefly interrupted by military service in the U.S. Army (1961-1963). Upon his return, he unexpectedly found himself appointed Chairperson of the Ceramics Department at Chouinard, a position previously held by his mentor, Vivika Heino. He led the department from 1963 to 1971, fostering a creative environment for aspiring ceramic artists.

Transition to Full-Time Studio Practice

A significant shift occurred in 1971 when Chouinard was renamed the California Institute of the Arts and relocated to Valencia. The ceramics department was unfortunately discontinued as part of this transition. This prompted Bacerra to dedicate himself fully to his studio practice, allowing him to explore his artistic vision without institutional constraints.
