The Life and Art of Jean Baptiste Berré
Born in Antwerp, Jean Baptiste Berré was a Flemish painter and sculptor who began his journey in the studio of a decorative painter. After studying at the Academy of Antwerp under Balthasar Paul Ommeganck, he became a member of the Genootschap der Kunsten in 1800. His early work included religious subjects, such as a Mater Dolorosa, alongside still lifes and landscapes. In 1808, Berré moved to Paris, where he gained prominence after Empress Josephine noticed his paintings reproduced on serving trays. This encounter led to commissions from French high society, including a work featuring a lioness with cubs on varnished sheet metal. He eventually became an official painter at the Jardin du Roi, where he studied wild animals like lions, tigers, and snakes to satisfy the exotic tastes of his clientele.
Artistic Mastery and Legacy
Berré was celebrated for the technical quality, finish, and bright, warm colors of his work, which followed the tradition of Dutch and Flemish painting. His expertise lay in rendering animals with great fidelity through the study of nature. While he painted landscapes and domestic animals, he often collaborated with specialist painters to include staffage in his compositions. His sculptural work focused on animals in bronze or plaster. Throughout his career, his works were exhibited in major salons across Brussels, Ghent, and Amsterdam, and were collected throughout Europe. Notably, in 1815, he was part of a team of resident artists at the National Museum of Natural History tasked with creating watercolor portraits of Saartjie Baartman.
