Biografie kunstenaar
Early Life, Family and Training
Anthonore Christensen enters the world on 5 July 1849 in Copenhagen, Denmark. She is born into a household where art is a primary language. Her mother, the painter Eleonora Tscherning, and her father, the army officer and politician Anton Frederik Tscherning, provide a foundation of both discipline and creativity. This artistic lineage extends to her sister, Sara Ulrik, who also pursues the path of a flower painter.
The training begins under the guidance of Emma Thomsen, a specialist in floral subjects. This early instruction shapes her technical approach to the natural world. Later, the mentorship shifts to her mother, Eleonora Tscherning. In 1869, the two women travel together, crossing borders to study in Germany, Italy, and Paris. These excursions move her training beyond the confines of a studio and into the light of Europe.
Artistic Career and Major Works
The exhibition halls of Charlottenborg provide the first glimpse of her talent. In 1867, she begins exhibiting under her maiden name, immediately drawing attention to her fresh and carefully presented compositions. The momentum builds quickly. By the following year, the Royal Painting Collection acquires Voxende Anemoner, tidligt Foraar (Growing Anemones, Early Spring), signaling her arrival in the Danish art scene.
Her focus shifts as her life changes. Following her marriage and a two-year period in Italy, her canvases reflect a new maturity. The flora of the south begins to appear in her work, bringing different light and forms to her still lifes. This evolution leads to significant recognition within the Danish art community. In 1887, she receives the Neuhausen Prize for Et Kurvelaag med afskaarne Roser (A Flower Basket with Roses). The momentum continues until 1893, when she is awarded the medal of the year.
Beyond her own canvas, she establishes herself as a teacher. Her technical skill attracts high-profile students, including Queen Louise and Queen Olga of Greece. She maintains this professional presence through the turn of the century, bridging the gap between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries with her specialized botanical studies.
Later Years and Death
On 4 October 1871, Anthonore Christensen marries the classical philologist Richard Christensen. The union leads the couple away from Denmark for a two-year period in Italy. This time abroad shifts the focus of her work, as the flora of the south begins to influence her compositions. The marriage remains a central part of her life until Richard's death in an accident five years later.
The later years of her life see her established as a significant figure in the Danish art scene, even as she maintains her focus on the botanical world. Her legacy continues through her son, Axel Anthon, who would later become a librarian and mathematics historian. Anthonore Christensen dies on 27 August 1926 in Hørsholm. She is laid to rest in Holmen Cemetery.
