Beschrijving verzamelobject

Of Mende origin, John Goba was born in 1944 in Mattru Jong, Sierra Leone, into the hermetic milieu of women’s Bondo Society, in which his grandmother played an important role. Goba came of age under her protection, and at the end of his period of initiation, he settled in Mountain Cut, a district in Freetown. There, when he was around thirty, he experienced a revelation which prompted him to begin making masks for the Ode-lay initiation rituals and masquerades that had sprung up in Freetown in the 1970s. Ode-lay masks and dress are characterized by an extraordinary ornamental exuberance, incorporating unexpected materials (such as Christmas tree ornaments) to achieve spectacular effects. Goba’s first masks, made of wood and brightly coloured with industrial paint, initially followed Ode-lay customs. As he became more experienced, he began to create sculptures with greater freedom.Goba’s imagery is inspired by the traditional lore and mysteries of his environment and his sculptures are a skilful blend of figures borrowed from time-honoured tales and his own fantasies. A multitude of porcupine quills invariably protrude from the main characters of his tableaux, as if assuring their protection and forbidding any access to the heart—or secret core—of the work. Each sculpture, Goba likes to say, has its own private history to which only the artist has the key.He died in 2019.

Biografie van de kunstenaar

John Goba Naissance: Weaver of Quill and Color

John Goba Naissance, born in Makeni, Sierra Leone in 1944, emerged from the rich artistic traditions of Mende culture to become one of Sierra Leone’s most distinctive sculptors. His work transcends mere representation; it embodies a profound engagement with folklore, ritual symbolism, and the transformative power of material—primarily epines de porc (porcupine quills)—to create mesmerizing visual narratives. Naissance's artistic journey began amidst the backdrop of Sierra Leone’s turbulent history, marked by colonial rule and civil conflict. Despite these challenges, he persevered in honing his craft, drawing inspiration from the ancestral beliefs and practices of his people. The Mende secret societies—particularly those concerned with initiation rites and divination—served as a cornerstone for his artistic vision, informing both his sculptural forms and his masks. These masks aren’t simply decorative objects; they are conduits to spiritual realms, meticulously crafted to embody symbolic representations of ancestors and spirits. His technique is remarkably innovative. Naissance painstakingly prepares small figures – often stylized humanoids – onto which he attaches hundreds of porcupine quills. This laborious process isn't merely about adding texture; it’s a deliberate act of appropriation and transformation. The quills, sourced locally, represent resilience and strength—symbols deeply rooted in Mende cosmology. Following the quill attachment, Naissance applies industrial paint in bold hues – crimson, turquoise, ochre – creating striking contrasts that heighten the visual impact of his sculptures. This juxtaposition of organic material and synthetic pigment underscores a fascination with blending tradition and modernity. Naissance gained international recognition through participation in prestigious art events like the Venice Biennale and the Havana Biennial, cementing his place as a pivotal figure in contemporary African art. His work has been exhibited extensively across Europe and North America, captivating audiences with its arresting imagery and intellectual depth. The Biennale selections particularly highlighted his ability to communicate complex cultural narratives on a global stage. Beyond his artistic accomplishments, Naissance’s legacy extends to fostering creativity within Sierra Leone's younger generation. He actively encourages experimentation and collaboration, ensuring that Mende artistic traditions continue to inspire future artists. His sculptures stand as testament to the enduring spirit of Sierra Leonean culture—a vibrant blend of ancestral wisdom and inventive artistry—and his contribution to the global art landscape remains undeniable.
