Malle Leis was an Estonian painter, printmaker, and theatre designer. Her creative journey began with formal education at the Tartu Art School and the Estonian Academy of Arts, where she graduated from the stage design department. In the early sixties, Leis preferred working in abstraction, but by the end of the decade, she developed an interest in pop art. Her 1972 painting, Sunlight Triptych, depicts red poppies and yellow daffodils against a blue background. In her 1977 work, The Longest Day, she placed tulips across a black canvas alongside a human head.
A defining characteristic of her oeuvre was her unique silk screen technique. Developed with the help of her husband, this process involved using ten to twenty different colors in each print, creating works with oriental resemblances. Her art has been featured in numerous exhibitions and is held in various collections, including the Estonian Art Museum and the Library of Congress.
