The light of Vercelli and Milan
Born in Vercelli in 1878, Antonio Ambrogio Alciati moved through the halls of the Institute of Belle Arti in his hometown before finding his way to Milan. In 1897, accompanied by his mother and sister, he followed a scholarship provided by the Municipality of Vercelli to the Brera Academy. It was here that the foundations of his technique were laid under the guidance of Vespasiano Bignami, Giuseppe Mentessi, and Cesare Tallone. The latter became a significant presence in his life, helping him refine his approach to portraiture and introducing him to the circles of the Milanese middle class.
His early years in the academy were marked by a focus on romantic subjects. Between 1902 and 1910, he produced works like Spasimo and The Lovers, often looking toward family themes through portraits of his mother. His brushwork during this period carried the weight of tradition, yet there was an emerging sense of movement in his hands.
A shift in color and form
As the decades progressed, Alciati’s palette underwent a visible change. The early reliance on shaded tones and a nearly monochromatic range began to fade. By 1910, a new energy appeared in his work, characterized by a greater constructive vigor and the use of brighter colors. This evolution is seen clearly in his later portraits, where the figures possess a certain weight and presence.
His portraits often focused on the upper middle class of Lombardy. He had a way of handling light that drew attention to the subject's face while leaving the background in a state of mystery. These backgrounds were often nuanced and almost imperceptible, ensuring that the viewer’s eye remained on the physiognomy of the sitter. In works such as Lady in Black from 1917 and Lady in Pink from 1921, the texture of clothing and the expression in a gaze take precedence over any surrounding landscape.
Teaching and later years
In 1920, Alciati returned to the Brera Academy, not as a student, but as a professor of figure drawing and painting, taking up the chair once held by Cesare Tallone. This period of his life was spent surrounded by students like Cristoforo De Amicis and Gino Meloni, passing on the methods he had learned decades prior.
Beyond the studio walls, his hand left marks on the architecture of Northern Italy. He painted frescoes for the Villa Pirotta in Brunate and worked on various churches throughout Lombardy. His personal life was also marked by steady changes; he married Raffaella di Malta in 1924, and his daughter, Amelia, frequently appeared as a subject in his paintings. After a life spent between the studios of Milan and the landscapes of Piedmont, he died in Milan in 1929.
