Suzuki Shōnen
A Life Rooted in Kyoto Born in Kyoto, Japan, Suzuki Shōnen grew up within the walls of a long-standing artistic lineage. His father, Suzuki Hyakunen, had established a studio that carried the weight of tradition from the late Edo period. Shōnen did not merely inherit a name; he inherited a way of seeing. In 1880, he began his official work at the Kyoto Prefecture Painting School, and by the following year, he took over his father's posi
tion as an instructor. He later opened his own school, the Matsunen-juku, to pass these methods to others. His early years were marked by a different name, Hyakusen, before he became known as Shōnen.
