The Artistic Journey of Karl Fred Dahmen
Born in Stolberg, Germany, Karl Fred Dahmen was a painter, graphic artist, and university teacher. His formal training began at the Kunstgewerbeschule Aachen, where he studied from 1932 to 1933 and later trained as a commercial graphic designer between 1933 and 1936. Following his military service and time as a prisoner of war, he traveled to Paris in 1951. This experience led him to co-found the Neue Aachener Gruppe in 1952. His career saw him teaching at a private school in Aachen and later receiving a teaching assignment at the Kunstschule Bremen in 1964. He eventually held a professorship at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in München, where he taught until his death in 1981.
Evolution of Style and Technique
Dahmen's body of work transitioned through several distinct phases. His early works featured wood collages and images oriented toward tachism. By the mid-1960s, his practice evolved to include material paintings and object boxes, integrating various real-world objects into his compositions. In 1967, he settled in Niederham, Chiemgau, where the local landscape became a significant resource for his Telelandschaften. These works often incorporated found objects from the region, creating symbolic monuments such as his Galgenbilder and Chiemgaulegende. In his final years, his paintings shifted toward bright, quiet compositions characterized by notations and ciphers.
