His formal education was a tapestry of prestigious influences, beginning at the Brooklyn Art Guild where he studied under the legendary Thomas Eakins. Seeking to expand his horizons, Kendall traveled to Europe, immersing himself in the rigorous traditions of the Academie Julian and passing the entrance examination to the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. His travels also took him to Madrid, driven by a desire to study and copy the masterful works of Diego Velazquez, whom he revered as the first great modern painter.
