Описание предмета коллекционирования

The piece donated to the Hospice is a study for a great work: more precisely, a monumental video installation, from the summer of 2012, for the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento. For some time now, this place has hosted events featuring monumental works of contemporary art that converse with the marvellous architecture of Ancient Greece. Here Plessi gives us a stone monolith within which we imagine a virtual image. As the artist himself writes about the project, it is “Not Plessi but Plessi’s archetypes” that seek that “Soul of the material” often present in the artist’s research, a soul that leads him to interact profoundly with monuments, architecture, and great artists of the past, in a witness’s ideal transition between history and contemporaneity.

Биография художника

The Alchemist of Liquid Landscapes

Fabrizio Plessi, born in Reggio Emilia in 1940, stands as a singular figure in the pantheon of contemporary art, recognized for his pioneering exploration of liquid media and immersive installations that fuse sculpture, architecture, and environmental science. Often described as an international pioneer and master of video art, Plessi has spent decades sculpting landscapes that appear to breathe, flow, and pulse with life. His artistic journey began in the fertile intellectual landscape of Bologna University, where he studied architecture alongside influential thinkers. This formative period instilled in him a profound appreciation for geometric precision combined with an awareness of ecological concerns—influences that would become central to his creative vision as he transitioned from the rigid structures of architecture toward the fluid possibilities of video sculpture.

Plessi’s work transcends traditional artistic boundaries, delving into primal themes of water, fire, and the intricate relationship between humanity and nature. He possesses a unique ability to interrogate these concepts through meticulously crafted artworks designed to provoke contemplation and inspire action. His breakthrough arrived in the late 1960s with “Monumenta,” a monumental sculpture constructed entirely from recycled plastic bottles submerged in Lake Garda. This ambitious undertaking was far more than an aesthetic statement; it served as a powerful visual metaphor for environmental degradation, prompting viewers to confront the consequences of consumerism and wastefulness. Such projects solidified his reputation as an artist committed to addressing pressing social issues through profound artistic intervention.

The Convergence of Technology and Nature

As his career progressed, Plessi’s research evolved toward the ambient nature offered by video technology, which allowed him to incorporate three-dimensional structures into a digital realm. From the 1980s onward, he began utilizing monitors and screens as integral components of his physical sculptures, creating an illusionistic relationship between representation and reality. By blending sounds, images, light, and movement, he developed a new art form where the shimmering fluidity of contemporary technology meets the ancient, elemental power of water. His installations often utilize techniques borrowed from diverse disciplines—including hydraulics, thermodynamics, and nanotechnology—to generate artworks that actively engage with their surroundings.

This mastery of "humanized technology" is perhaps most evident in his large-scale public works and monumental installations:

  • Mare Verticale (Vertical Sea): A breathtaking 44-meter-high installation created for the Italian pavilion at the Expo in Hannover in 2000, representing an uninterrupted flow of blue water.
  • Llaüt Light: An evocative installation at the Venice Arsenale featuring overturned traditional trawling boats from the Balearic Islands, serving as both a tribute to the Mediterranean and an admonition regarding the sea's fragility.
  • Monumenta (Video Installation): A study for a monumental work at the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento, where a stone monolith hosts a virtual image, seeking the "soul of the material" through a transition between history and contemporaneity.

A Legacy of Fluidity and Permanence

Plessi’s significance lies in his ability to reconcile artistic tradition with technological brilliance. Having studied at the Accademia delle Belle Arti in Venice, where he later served as a professor of painting, he carries the weight of classical heritage into the digital age. His work does not merely depict nature; it recreates its essence through mechanical and electronic reproduction. Whether through the use of monitors embedded in wood, iron, or stone, or through large-scale land art that interacts with ancient Greek architecture, Plessi creates a bridge between the ephemeral and the eternal.

Today, living and working between Venice and Mallorca, his influence remains pervasive in the global contemporary art scene. His works are found in the world’s most prestigious museums, including the Plessi Museum at the Brenner Pass. By transforming the screen into a window of flowing liquid and the sculpture into a vessel for environmental consciousness, Fabrizio Plessi has ensured that his "liquid landscapes" will continue to flow through the collective memory of art history, reminding us of our profound connection to the elemental forces of our planet.
