Jan Kochanowski (1530 – August 22, 1584) was a Polish Renaissance poet who is widely regarded as the greatest Polish poet before Adam Mickiewicz. Born in Syczyn, Poland, he came from a noble family. Career and Royal Service

He briefly served as a courtier to Piotr Myszkowski before becoming secretary to King Sigismund II Augustus in approximately 1563. This position allowed him to participate in significant historical events, including the Sejm of Lublin in 1569, which formalized the Union of Lublin and established the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. He was also appointed provost of Poznań Cathedral in 1564.
