Описание предмета коллекционирования

In observation of the current conditions of Daebudo Island (Daebudo), in which a traditional way of living is rapidly changing due to the indiscreet redevelopments of the area into a leisure and tourist attraction, I intend to rearrange the landscape of Daebudo as one of the remaining islands in the west sea. Promenade is a French word, meaning a ‘walk’ or ‘trail.’ Besidethe simple meaning of ‘walking,’ this word evokes sensual as well as intellectual interactions, such as seeing, feeling, and thinking that one engages with, while taking a walk. I can tell from my experience that nothing is better than taking a walk when it comes to learning about geological locations, characteristics, and the environment of a new place. The crab trap in a circular shape used in the project is one of the fishing tools I paid attention to when I first visited Daebudo. One day a fishing boat owner told me that out-of-use fishing traps are mostly thrown into the sea owing to their disposal cost. These fishing traps abandoned in the sea are a threat to the marine ecosystem and environment. It is the main cause of ocean contamination and “ghost fishing” in this area, devastating water resources. I wanted to unravel these materials I discovered, the people of Daebudo I met, and the episodes I collected from the people in the different context of a ‘walk.’ I would like to suggest another landscape that brings the stories related to the area to light, through which the visitors feel, experience, and see the scenery of the reed field and the natural ecology between the fishing traps. At the same time, they learn about the tragic history of Seongamdo and the Seongam reformatory, while slowly taking a walk by the Promenade leading to the reed trail.

Биография художника

A Journey from the Spotlight to the Studio

Jung Sung-Won’s life is a tapestry woven from the disparate threads of cinematic drama and quiet, contemplative artistry. Born in South Korea in 1973, his early years were defined by the high-energy worlds of fashion modeling and the silver screen. He first captured the public imagination not through a brushstroke, but through his commanding presence in the gritty 1997 film Beat, a performance that earned him prestigious accolades and established him as a vital figure in Korean cinema.

Yet, beneath the veneer of a successful actor lay a foundation of discipline forged in the rigorous training of classical ballet. This early immersion in movement and precision would eventually find a new expression, transitioning from the physical grace of the stage to the meticulous, light-driven explorations of his canvas. His evolution represents a profound shift from being an object of the camera's gaze to becoming the creator of his own visual reality, where the drama of film is replaced by the subtle tension of shadow and light.

The Alchemy of Projection and Light

At the heart of Jung’s artistic evolution is a technique as mesmerizing as it is complex: projection drawing. Moving away from the spontaneous energy of performance, he embraced a method that demands an intense dialogue between the artist and the ephemeral. By meticulously rendering subjects in graphite before projecting them back onto the surface, Jung creates a space where light and form interact with unexpected serendipity.

This process allows him to capture the subtle shifts in tone and the delicate interplay of shadows, much like the Surrealist masters who inspired his vision. His work is deeply informed by the dreamlike enigmas of René Magritte and the quiet, structural stillness of Giorgio Morandi. Through this method, he captures not just what is seen initially, but how light interacts with form—a fascinating interplay between planned execution and serendipitous discovery that mirrors the layered complexities found within his cinematic history.

Narratives of Landscape and Connection

Jung’s art extends far beyond mere visual representation; it is a profound meditation on connection, vulnerability, and the changing face of the natural world. In his evocative work Promenade, he turns his gaze toward the shifting landscapes of Daebudo Island. Through this project, he explores the tension between traditional ways of life and the encroaching tide of modern redevelopment.

His observations are deeply ecological, noting the presence of abandoned fishing traps that threaten marine ecosystems—a poignant symbol of human impact on the environment. For Jung, a promenade is more than a simple walk; it is an intellectual and sensual engagement with the earth, where every step reveals a new layer of history, ecology, and human story. His work invites the viewer to slow down, much like his own artistic process, to witness the beauty found in the intersection of memory, nature, and the present moment.
