Born into a modest Protestant family in Szokolya, Hungary, Mányoki’s early life was marked by hardship—his father served as a pastor in a rural parish struggling financially—a circumstance that profoundly shaped his artistic trajectory. Recognizing his innate talent, Dölfer, a German staff officer who took responsibility for his upbringing, secured him an education at Lüneburg and Hamburg, laying the foundation for his burgeoning artistic career. These formative years instilled in Mányoki a deep appreciation for classical ideals of beauty and proportion, influences that would permeate his subsequent work. He honed his skills under the tutelage of Andreas Scheits in Hanover and Nicolas de Largillière in Paris—institutions renowned for fostering innovation within the Baroque tradition—expanding his artistic horizons beyond Hungary’s borders. The Parisian atelier proved particularly influential, exposing him to the burgeoning Enlightenment spirit and encouraging experimentation with new techniques. Mányoki's formal training culminated in a journey to Amsterdam where he immersed himself in the vibrant art scene of the Dutch Republic.
