Dalbit-Moonshine Ručne maľovaný olejomaľba – štandardné a vlastné veľkosti

The Ethereal Glow of Dalbit

In the quiet, monochromatic realms of Lee Jae Sam, the world is stripped of its vibrant distractions, leaving only the profound essence of light and shadow. Born in 1960 in Youngwol-gun, South Korea, Lee has mastered a visual language that speaks to the soul through the medium of charcoal. His work is deeply rooted in the concept of Dalbit, or moonshine—a meditative practice of observing the subtle, transformative beauty of nature under the lunar glow. Through meticulous layering and delicate blending, he achieves tonal gradations that feel less like drawings and more like captured memories of a nocturnal landscape. There is a profound stillness in his compositions, an invitation to pause and breathe within the silvered textures of a waterfall or the soft, haunting silhouette of a mountain.

A Journey Through Tradition and Technique

Lee’s artistic evolution is a testament to the strength of formal discipline meeting contemporary vision. His journey began with foundational training at Gangnung National University, where he immersed himself in the rigors of fine arts. This academic grounding was further refined during his pursuit of a master’s degree at the prestigious Hongik University. These years of study provided him with the technical prowess to manipulate charcoal into something nearly atmospheric. Rather than relying on the spectacle of color, Lee utilizes a monochrome palette to heighten the expressive power of his subjects. By eschewing the unnecessary, he allows the viewer to focus on the structural beauty and emotional weight of the landscape, creating works that exist in the delicate space between representation and abstraction.

A Resonant Global Presence

The reach of Lee Jae Sam’s lunar landscapes extends far beyond the borders of South Korea. His ability to evoke universal feelings of serenity and balance has earned him significant recognition on international platforms such as Ocula, Artsy, and Google Arts & Culture. This global dialogue is further strengthened by his representation by Ode to Art, Singapore’s premier contemporary art gallery, which has helped solidify his position within the global art market. From solo exhibitions at Galerie Jung in Seoul to appearances in major digital archives, Lee continues to foster a connection between the ancient traditions of Korean landscape art and the modern collector. His work remains a vital contribution to contemporary art, reminding us that even in the darkest shadows, there is a profound and luminous truth to be found.
