Popis predmetu

Pianist John Tilbury and sculptor Nicola Durvasula will produce work in dialogue with each other: During the last weeks of the Kochi-Muziris Biennale, Tilbury will play music with Durvasula’s sculptures, creating soundscapes that are new and distinct, and, that engage with Kochi’s local culture; while Durvasula will create 108 objects in a diaristic engagement with Tilbury’s new scores and the Biennale. Tilbury and Durvasula remind us that music has a matter, it emerges from substance, be that the piano itself or abstract sculptures, which have their own ideas and spirit. This is to say it makes material that which remains unseen, that which is essential.

Nicola Durvasula: Bridging East and West Through Sensory Exploration

Nicola Durvasula’s artistic journey began in Jersey, United Kingdom, where she honed her foundational skills at the École des Beaux Arts du Havre before furthering her studies at Kent Institute of Art and Design. This early exposure to diverse artistic traditions would prove pivotal in shaping her distinctive approach – one characterized by a profound fascination with blending Eastern philosophies and Western techniques into captivating visual narratives. Her nomadic lifestyle has taken her across continents, from France’s vibrant cultural landscape to India's spiritual heartland and ultimately establishing her presence in the United States. These experiences have instilled within Durvasula an unwavering commitment to exploring intersections between cultures, translating these observations into evocative artworks that resonate with layered meanings. Her artistic repertoire spans painting, sculpture, and installation, demonstrating a versatility that reflects her intellectual curiosity and desire to engage with complex ideas. Born in 1960, Nicola Durvasula’s formative years were marked by an immersion in European art history and aesthetics. The École des Beaux Arts du Havre instilled in her a meticulous understanding of classical composition and technique—skills she would later adapt to her own explorations of contemporary visual language. Simultaneously, Kent Institute of Art and Design broadened her horizons, introducing her to experimental approaches and fostering a critical engagement with artistic discourse. This dual influence is palpable throughout her oeuvre, where Western formalism coexists harmoniously with Eastern conceptual frameworks. Her artistic practice centers around investigating the relationship between perception and representation—a preoccupation that stems from her deep interest in Hindu iconography and its ability to convey spiritual truths. She meticulously crafts artworks that capture fleeting moments of beauty and evoke profound emotional responses, mirroring the dynamism inherent in natural phenomena. Durvasula’s sculptures are particularly noteworthy for their kinetic qualities; pieces that seem to breathe and shift subtly, inviting viewers to contemplate the passage of time and the ephemeral nature of existence. Consider her “Practice Pieces,” a collaborative effort with musician John Tilbury—a deliberate juxtaposition designed to provoke contemplation on these fundamental themes. Throughout her career, Durvasula has participated in numerous exhibitions across Europe and North America, showcasing her distinctive style and furthering dialogue between artistic traditions. Her work has been recognized for its intellectual rigor and emotional depth, establishing her as a prominent figure within the contemporary art scene. Notably, she was honored with inclusion in “Homespun,” curated by Devi Art Foundation in New Delhi—a testament to her commitment to fostering intercultural understanding through visual expression. Furthermore, her sculptures were featured in “Les Printemps des Poètes” at Salon de Lecture, Musée de Quai Branly in Paris—demonstrating her ability to engage with public spaces and contribute to broader cultural conversations. Recent exhibitions include “The Sahmat Collective: Art and Activism in India since 1989” at Smart Museum of Art in Chicago, where her work was presented alongside other artists exploring themes of social justice and artistic innovation. This collaborative effort underscores Durvasula’s belief that art can serve as a catalyst for critical reflection and inspire positive change—a conviction that informs her ongoing artistic endeavors. Nicola Durvasula continues to refine her craft, pushing boundaries and enriching the artistic landscape with pieces that transcend cultural distinctions.
