Velja za enega najpomembnejših ekspresionističnih slikarjev v Nemčiji. Ob Vasiliju Kandinskim je bil soustanovitelj uredniške skupine Der Blaue Reiter, ki je svojo prvo razstavo odprla v Münchnu 18. decembra 1911.
