His early explorations into Mail Art—a movement defined by its democratic, postal-based dissemination—revealed a pioneer who understood that art could exist far beyond the sterile confines of a gallery wall, traveling through the very veins of the postal system to connect strangers and collaborators alike.The Interplay of Science and Image
As his career migrated toward the vibrant, experimental atmosphere of Southern California in 1970, Cumming’s practice underwent a revolutionary metamorphosis.
