James Darrell Northrup Weeks lived a life deeply rooted in the academic and creative landscapes of California and beyond. Born in Oakland, United States of America, in 1922, he was the son of Anson Weeks and Ruth Daly, both of whom were musicians. This early connection to rhythm and melody likely informed his approach to the canvas. After graduating from Lowell High School in 1940, he began his studies at the California School of Fine Arts. His education was briefly interrupted by service in the US Air Force during World War II, but he returned to his studies in 1946, eventually graduating in 1947.

His path as an educator was as significant as his work in the studio. He spent many years sharing his knowledge with students at several institutions:

• The San Francisco Art Institute, where he taught from 1958 to 1967.
• The University of California, Los Angeles, from 1967 to 1970.
• Boston University, where he served as Chairman of the Art Department after moving there in 1970.

To support his life and teaching, Weeks took on practical, humble roles, including working at a sandwich factory to supplement his income. This grounded reality sat alongside his high-level academic responsibilities.

The Language of the Bay Area

As an early member of the Bay Area Figurative Movement, Weeks occupied a unique space among his peers. While many in this group moved toward non-representational styles, Weeks remained tied to the recognizable world. He preferred modernist figurative, genre, landscape, and interior paintings. His approach was not about pure expression through loose brushwork, but rather about using abstraction within the very ideas of painting itself.

His figures often possessed a certain rigidity. This quality was noted by those who observed his work, suggesting that his aim was less about emotional release and more about achieving comprehension through form. He studied under notable figures like William Gaw and David Park at the California School of Fine Arts, and later expanded his horizons in 1952 by studying at the Escuela de Pintura y Escultura in Mexico City. This period of study helped refine a style that balanced the structural integrity of his subjects with an abstract sensibility.

A Lasting Presence

The work of James Weeks continues to be recognized in significant collections and auction houses. His paintings, such as Boating in the Park, have reached notable values at auction, reflecting a lasting interest in his specific vision of the figurative tradition. He passed away in 1998, leaving behind a legacy defined by both his disciplined hand and his dedication to the art of teaching.
