He utilized oil as his primary medium for these larger, more structural works, though his time studying in Belgium saw him utilize watercolour to explore different levels of transparency and atmosphere.

He applied his draughtsmanship to the illustration of medical works and worked as an art restorer for the Edinburgh dealer Henry Doig.
