The son of Andrew Archer, a dentist, and Ann Cunningham Gregory, his early years in Scotland provided the foundation for a career defined by meticulous detail and narrative depth. Educated at the Royal High School, Archer sought formal artistic refinement at the Trustee's Academy in Edinburgh, where he studied under the guidance of masters such as Sir William Allan and Thomas Duncan.
