Jan Kaláb: Exploring Organic Geometry Through Vibrant Color
Jan Kaláb, born June 20th, 1978 in Prague, Czechia, is a contemporary visual artist whose distinctive style blends abstract geometric forms with bold color palettes—a fusion that echoes the legacy of Piet Mondrian and Vasilij Kupka. His artistic journey began as a graffiti artist under pseudonyms “cakes” or “point,” immersing him in the rebellious energy of urban expression before transitioning to formal education at Prague’s Academy of Fine Arts, where he honed his skills and embraced the principles of neoplasticism—a movement championed by Mondrian that prioritizes pure geometric abstraction. This pivotal shift marked a significant turning point in Kaláb's artistic trajectory. Abandoning sculptural explorations rooted in alphabet lettering 3D designs, he dedicated himself to painting on canvas, adopting an approach heavily influenced by Kupka’s exploration of color and spatial perception. He sought to distill visual experience into its most fundamental elements—shapes and hues—creating canvases that pulsate with chromatic intensity while maintaining a deliberate structural rigor.
