It was once held within the collection of the Hammeraly family before moving into the possession of Mrs. Oliver Crocker Sturm in Boston. From there, the painting passed to her brother, Mr. Smith, in Vermont. The lineage continued through his son, Curtiss R. Smith, also in Vermont, until the piece was eventually sold to J. E. Gombos.
Following its time in the Gombos collection, the painting was gifted to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1959. This transition ensured its place within a public institution, moving from the private spheres of the Sturm and Smith families into the permanent care of the museum.
