      早年生活与艺术起步

      马克·格特勒是一位擅长人物、肖像及静物题材的英国画家，于1891年12月9日出生在伦敦斯皮塔佛德。他的早年生活及其与多拉·卡林顿之间的情感纠葛，成为了吉尔伯特·坎南小说《门德尔》的灵感源泉。1896年，随着家人前往伦敦与父亲团聚，他的名字也从“马克斯”进行了英式化改写，成为了我们熟知的“马克”。格特勒自幼便展现出惊人的绘画天赋，尽管他在1906年进入摄政街理工学院修读艺术课程，却因家境贫寒而被迫辍学。1908年，他在参加理工学院晚间课程的同时，开始在彩色玻璃公司Clayton & Bell担任学徒，这段艰辛的岁月磨砺了他的艺术意志。

      名声鹊起与传世杰作

      1908年，格特勒在一次全国艺术竞赛中荣获第三名，这成为了他艺术生涯腾飞的起点。随后，他考入了伦敦的斯莱德艺术学院，并与保罗·纳什、爱德华·沃兹沃思及爵士斯坦利·斯宾塞等杰出艺术家成为了同辈。在艺术赞助人的扶持下，奥托琳·莫雷尔夫人将他引荐给了坎登镇派的领袖沃尔特·西克特。然而，格特勒作为社会肖像画家的辉煌成就却转瞬即逝，这很大程度上源于他那倔强且易怒的性格——他始终致力于按照自己的艺术愿景去推进创作，这种对纯粹性的执着最终导致了个人境遇的挫败与贫困。
