Michela Degioannis: Capturing the Essence of Nature Through Watercolor and Ink

Michela Degioannis, also known as Michela Fontana, emerged from Cagliari, Italy in 1983, bringing a distinctive vision to the realm of watercolor and ink art. Her artistic journey began with formal training at Liceo Artistico Cagliari, followed by explorations into comics and illustration under the guidance of Massimo Dall'oglio—experiences that undoubtedly shaped her creative sensibilities. Fontana’s style is characterized by meticulous observation and an ability to translate natural landscapes and animal subjects onto paper with breathtaking realism. Her works resonate with a profound appreciation for detail, capturing subtle nuances of color and texture that convey not just what is seen but also how it feels. Influenced by masters of watercolor like Turner and Constable, she skillfully employs layering techniques and delicate washes to achieve luminous effects—a testament to her dedication to mastering traditional artistic methods. Her exhibitions have spanned across Italy, notably at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Bologna, showcasing her commitment to sharing her art with a wider audience. Beyond formal galleries, Fontana’s work has found its way into publications such as ‘Il Bambino d'Acqua,’ a captivating book exploring themes of childhood and water imagery, and appeared in Root & Star magazine—demonstrating her versatility and engagement with contemporary artistic discourse. Currently residing in Sardinia, Italy, Degioannis continues to refine her craft and explore new avenues for creative expression.
