Rick Lowe’s artistic journey began in rural Alabama, shaped by a childhood immersed in the traditions of sharecropping—a formative experience that instilled within him a deep appreciation for resilience and connection to place. He pursued his passion for landscape painting at Columbus College in Georgia before relocating to Houston in 1985, where he honed his craft alongside John Biggers at Texas Southern University, absorbing influences from muralism and exploring the intersection of art and social justice.
