      A Life Shaped by Borders and Brushstrokes

      Maria Berezowska lived a life that moved across the maps of Europe, from the Russian Empire to the heart of Paris and back to Poland. Born in Baranowicze, her early years were spent in the vast landscapes of Siberia while her father worked on the Trans-Siberian Railway. This childhood of movement likely prepared her for a career defined by shifting borders and changing perspectives. By 1908, she was studying at an arts high school in St. Petersburg, later finding her way to the artistic circles of Kraków and Munich.

      Her education was shaped by notable figures like Jacek Malczewski and Leon Wyczółkowski. These mentors helped refine a technique that could shift from the delicate light lines of a drawing to the layered pigments of a watercolor. In Warsaw, she met Kazimierz Grus, a talented caricaturist. Their marriage in 1920 brought her into the lively world of press illustration, where she began to find her own voice through the pages of periodicals like Szczutek.

      The Boldness of the Pen

      Berezowska was a woman of many professional identities: painter, graphic artist, caricaturist, and illustrator. She possessed a particular talent for capturing the human form, often exploring themes that were considered daring for her time. Her work frequently appeared in popular weekly magazines such as Cyrulik Warszawski and Szpilki. In these pages, she became known for illustrations that featured nudity and erotic themes, rendered with a style that remained tasteful even when the subject matter was provocative.

      During her years in Paris between 1933 and 1936, her reach expanded to international publications like Le Figaro and Vogue. However, her wit also brought her into direct conflict with political powers. She created a series of caricatures titled The Love Affairs of the Sweet Adolf for the magazine Ici Paris. This work mocked Adolf Hitler and led to a lawsuit from the German Embassy in Paris. While she escaped paying a fine, the incident placed her on a Nazi blacklist, a shadow that would follow her into the darkest years of her life.

      Survival and Memory

      The outbreak of World War II brought an end to her bohemian lifestyle in Paris and forced her back to Poland. The war brought unimaginable hardship; she was imprisoned at Pawiak prison and later sent to the Ravensbrück concentration camp with a death sentence. Even within the confines of these brutal spaces, she continued to use art as a way to document the reality around her. She produced works such as Cell 47 and Cleanliness Inspection, capturing the grim details of prison life.

      In the camp, she also drew scenes of her fellow inmates, like Janina Peretjatkowicz Talking about Constellations during a Roll Call at Ravensbrück. Her depictions were striking for their contrast; while she showed the exhaustion of those around her, she often portrayed the guards with a sense of health and vitality. After the liberation by Soviet forces, she traveled through Stockholm before finally returning to Warsaw in 1946. She spent her remaining years in Poland, working as an illustrator and stage designer until her death in 1978.
