oluf høst, a prominent danish expressionist painter, was born on march 18, 1884, in svaneke, bornholm. his artistic journey began with studies at the academy of fine arts in copenhagen from 1906 to 1915. it was during this period that he became acquainted with harald giersing's school, where karl isakson introduced him to expressionism, drawing inspiration from cézanne and van gogh.
artistic style and themes
oluf høst's work is characterized by its depiction of changing light and mood, heavily influenced by the nordic tradition. his favorite subjects included local buildings and landscapes, such as bognemark, a little farmhouse near gudhjem, which he painted over 200 times under varying conditions. this fixation on bognemark is reflective of his unique approach to capturing the essence of bornholm's scenic beauty.
