Gerard van Edema: The Salvator Rosa of the North

Gerard van Edema (c. 1652, Amsterdam – c. 1700, Richmond, Surrey), was a Dutch landscape painter who established himself in England during the mid-17th century. Born around 1652 in Friesland, Edema’s artistic journey began under the tutelage of Allart van Everdingen, whose teachings instilled in him a fascination for portraying landscapes imbued with wildness and drama—particularly rocky terrains and cascading waterfalls.
