His artistic development was deeply rooted in the study of old masters, and he clearly possessed access to significant collections of classical works. Within this group, Gu Yun's work was noted for its distinctive use of ink tones and a profound respect for historical themes, often imbuing even human subjects—such as his portrayal of the Tang monk Huaisu—with an amusing and deeply human touch that resonated with the 19th-century populist spirit.
