Kunstnerens biografi
Jan Kaláb: Exploring Organic Geometry Through Vibrant Color
Jan Kaláb, born June 20th, 1978 in Prague, Czechia, is a contemporary visual artist whose distinctive style blends abstract geometric forms with bold color palettes—a fusion that echoes the legacy of Piet Mondrian and Vasilij Kupka. His artistic journey began as a graffiti artist under pseudonyms “cakes” or “point,” immersing him in the rebellious energy of urban expression before transitioning to formal education at Prague’s Academy of Fine Arts, where he honed his skills and embraced the principles of neoplasticism—a movement championed by Mondrian that prioritizes pure geometric abstraction. This pivotal shift marked a significant turning point in Kaláb's artistic trajectory. Abandoning sculptural explorations rooted in alphabet lettering 3D designs, he dedicated himself to painting on canvas, adopting an approach heavily influenced by Kupka’s exploration of color and spatial perception. He sought to distill visual experience into its most fundamental elements—shapes and hues—creating canvases that pulsate with chromatic intensity while maintaining a deliberate structural rigor. Kaláb's artistic development has been marked by numerous solo exhibitions across Europe, showcasing his evolving vision. Starting in Prague’s Trafo Gallery in 2008, he steadily expanded his reach, presenting works in cities like Sofia, Buenos Aires, Bogotá, Berlin, Paris, Bologna, London, San Francisco, Winter Park, FL, Valencia, Taipei and Miami. These exhibitions solidified his reputation as a compelling voice within the international art scene. Furthermore, Kaláb’s commitment to artistic experimentation extends beyond individual canvases; he has embraced mural painting as another medium for conveying complex ideas through visual language. His contribution to “Mural Art Worldwide,” published in 2010, underscores his belief in public art's capacity to engage communities and stimulate dialogue. His work has garnered critical acclaim from publications such as Novinky.cz, Lidové noviny, Creative Boom, Aktuálně.cz and Idnes.cz, reflecting the breadth of his artistic impact. Examining Kaláb’s oeuvre reveals a fascination with geometric abstraction—a deliberate choice that speaks to both aesthetic beauty and conceptual depth. His exploration of organic forms alongside precise geometric structures represents an enduring contribution to modern art history.- Notable Exhibitions: Prague (2008, 2011, 2013, 2015), Sofia (2011), Buenos Aires (2014), Bogotá (2016), Berlin (2015), Paris (2016), Bologna (2017, 2019), London (2015, 2020), San Francisco (2018), Winter Park, FL (2018), Valencia (2019), Taipei (2019), Miami (2019)
