He enrolled at the Royal Academy schools in 1778, where he studied under Edward Penny, whose own artistic practice focused on depicting acts of charity, fostering a humanist sensibility within Bigg's formative years. Bigg quickly established himself as a prolific painter, specializing primarily in genre scenes and portraits, particularly those capturing the idyllic beauty of rural landscapes and portraying members of the landed gentry. His early works demonstrated an acute sensitivity to light and atmosphere—characteristics that would become hallmarks of his distinctive style. He was drawn to depicting ordinary people engaged in everyday activities, imbued with a palpable sense of compassion and realism. This approach aligns him closely with artists like George Morland and Thomas Gainsborough, who similarly sought to portray the virtues of rural life through carefully observed detail.
