A Life in Color and Nature

Born in Mannheim, Germany, Anna Peters was a painter who dedicated much of her life to the study of the natural world. As the daughter and pupil of the Dutch landscape painter Pieter Francis Peters, she developed a skill set that allowed her to become the first woman in Germany to earn a living through the sale of her paintings. Her artistic journey began early, with her first known picture dating to 1860. Throughout her career, she worked in various mediums, including drawings, watercolours, and oil paintings.

Her subject matter was deeply rooted in the beauty of flora and the serenity of the countryside. She became particularly renowned for her flower paintings and village landscapes. Many of her floral compositions followed a traditional Dutch century style, often featuring:

  • Bouquets composed with grasses and twigs
  • Occasional depictions of insects

In addition to her botanical works, Peters produced landscapes, depictions of children, and decorations for royal castles in Stuttgart and Friedrichshafen.

Artistic Legacy and Advocacy

Peters was a significant figure in the professional landscape for women artists. She was a member of the state political association of female Berlin artists and served as a co-founder of the Württemberg Painters Association. Her leadership was prominent, as she chaired the association from 1893 to 1902 and again from 1904 to 1919. Through organizing exhibitions and hosting social events, she campaigned for social recognition and sought to overcome reservations regarding women painters of her era.

Her technical evolution saw her style become increasingly impressionistic in the late 1890s. Following this period, she regularly participated in exhibitions across several cities, including:

  • Berlin
  • Munich
  • Dresden
  • Vienna

In her later years, she resided in Stuttgart-Sonnenberg, where she remained until her death. Her impact on her home city is memorialized by the Anna-Peters Road in Stuttgart.
