The Life and Legacy of Daniel Preissler
Born in Prague, Daniel Preissler was the son of a locksmith named Georg Preisler and descended from a renowned family of master glassmakers from Bohemia. His artistic journey began in 1642 when he entered an apprenticeship with the Dresden Court painter Christian Schiebling. Following his training, he traveled through Germany and Austria before eventually settling in Nuremberg in 1652. His talent was recognized through significant commissions, such as the two panels for the great organs of the St. Sebaldus Church in Nuremberg, which depicted the city's main musicians, academics, and clerics. He also painted the Mission of the Holy Spirit for the Heilig-Geist-Spital in Nuremberg.
Preissler was known for creating expressive portraits, including a depiction of Justina Katharina Kirchmayr around 1660. One of his notable works is a self-portrait playing the lute, which features his wife and three children. This piece, dated 1665, was created during the year of his premature death at the age of 38. His artistic lineage continued through his son, Johann Daniel Preissler, and several of his grandchildren, all of whom became painters in Nuremberg.
