The Life and Art of Henry Payne

Born in Birmingham, United Kingdom, Henry Payne was a versatile painter, watercolourist, and stained glass artist. He was a prominent member of the Birmingham Group of Artist-Craftsmen, a circle that formed around the Birmingham School of Art in the late nineteenth century. His early training took place under Edward R. Taylor at the Birmingham School of Art, where he was among the students commissioned to paint murals for the redecoration of the Birmingham Town Hall.

Payne’s career was marked by a deep commitment to the Arts and Crafts tradition. In 1899, he joined the staff of the Birmingham School of Art as a teacher of drawing and painting. He later focused on the design and manufacture of stained glass, studying the process in London under Christopher Whall. This integrated approach allowed him to establish an independent business designing and manufacturing stained glass for various churches, including St Andrew's, Roker, and St Mary's, Madresfield.

Decorative Mastery and Landscapes

One of Payne's most significant achievements lies in his decorative painting. Between 1902 and 1923, he contributed to the wall paintings of the chapel at Madresfield Court in Worcestershire, working in fresco and tempera alongside other figures of the Birmingham Arts and Crafts movement. His work also reached the Palace of Westminster, where he produced the wall painting Plucking the Red and White Roses in the Old Temple Gardens, an allegory on the Wars of the Roses.

Beyond his large-scale decorative works, Payne was a prolific watercolourist. He exhibited his landscape watercolours at the Royal Academy from 1899 to 1935 and was elected a member of the Royal Watercolour Society in 1920. In 1912, he established St Loe's Guild in Amberley, continuing his work in fresco and stained glass. He eventually moved to the Cotswolds, settling in Amberley, Gloucestershire.
