A Life of Maritime Artistry

Born in Wolgast, Germany, Willy Stöwer was the son of a sea captain. Though he originally trained as a metalworker and worked as a technician in the engineering offices of various German shipyards, he eventually received commissions as a draftsman, illustrator, and painter. His talent was recognized early, and his painting technique was self-taught. Following his marriage to Henrietta Dettmann in 1892, he was able to devote himself exclusively to his work as an artist.

Stöwer became a prolific creator between 1892 and 1929, producing approximately 900 black-and-white and 335 color illustrations for 57 books, alongside posters, postcards, and calendars. He was a highly regarded marine painter, and Kaiser Wilhelm II became an enthusiastic patron of his work. The artist even accompanied the Emperor on several voyages between 1905 and 1912.

Legacy and Notable Works

Stöwer is widely recognized for his nautical paintings and lithographs. One of his most iconic illustrations is his representation of the sinking of the RMS Titanic in the magazine Die Gartenlaube. Created in 1912, this image became famous despite minor technical errors, such as the depiction of the fourth funnel. His work also includes a portrait of the Kaiser in a naval uniform, which hung in the Kaiser's Room at Achilleion on the Island of Corfu.

His diverse body of work includes:

In addition to his visual art, Stöwer was an author and editor, publishing works such as To Sea with Brush and Palette and German U-boat Actions, in Words and Pictures. He died in Berlin in 1931.
