This method stripped away the artifice often found in 19th-century landscapes, replacing it with a heavy focus on technical excellence and realistic line. His canvases do not rely on vague atmospheres to impress; instead, they present the rugged truth of mossy grass, roughly hewn rocks, and the energetic movement of highland water.

      His approach was grounded in a rigorous training that began far from the easel. Before entering the Trustees' Art Academy, Brown served an apprenticeship as a glass-stainer for the firm of Messrs. Ballantine. This early exposure to the precision required for stained glass likely informed the accuracy of his draughtsmanship. Under the instruction of Robert Scott Lauder in Edinburgh, he refined this skill, eventually moving toward oil and watercolour to capture the specific light of the Scottish Lowlands and Highlands.
