His approach was grounded in a rigorous training that began far from the easel. Before entering the Trustees' Art Academy, Brown served an apprenticeship as a glass-stainer for the firm of Messrs. Ballantine. This early exposure to the precision required for stained glass likely informed the accuracy of his draughtsmanship. Under the instruction of Robert Scott Lauder in Edinburgh, he refined this skill, eventually moving toward oil and watercolour to capture the specific light of the Scottish Lowlands and Highlands.

Brown’s repertoire was defined by a geographical specificity. While he found subjects in the English counties of Surrey, Kent, and Yorkshire, his most significant contributions lie in his depictions of Scotland. He utilized oil as his primary medium for these larger, more structural works, though his time studying in Belgium saw him utilize watercolour to explore different levels of transparency and atmosphere.
