From a young age, Donley demonstrated an aptitude for drawing and painting, initially focusing on botanical studies before transitioning to landscapes. His early works reveal meticulous observation of detail and a commitment to capturing the subtle nuances of light and color within the English countryside.- Early Influences: Donley’s artistic sensibilities were shaped by Impressionism and Neo-Romanticism, movements that championed subjective experience and emotional resonance alongside accurate representation. Artists like Claude Monet and Frederic Church served as inspiration for his exploration of atmospheric perspective and tonal harmonies.
- Formal Training: He studied at the Slade School of Fine Art in London from 1906 to 1908, honing his technical skills under William Ord Kendall and gaining exposure to a wider artistic community.
