John Smibert stands as a monumental figure in the history of American art, recognized as the first academically trained artist to bring his refined skills to the Thirteen Colonies. Born in Edinburgh, his journey from a young apprentice in Scotland to a celebrated portraitist in the New World is a narrative of profound artistic migration.
