Born in Kaufbeuren, Germany, he moved to Munich where he attended the Kunstgewerbeschule, studying under teachers such as Maximilian Dasio and Julius Diez. His early professional life was marked by a diverse range of creative pursuits; he worked as a freelance commercial artist and gained recognition for his exlibris designs. His graphic works appeared in various publications, including the magazine Jugend.
