The Emergence of a Colorist
Born in Chicago, United States, Karl Benjamin began his journey into the world of art quite unexpectedly. While serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II, he later moved to California to study English literature, history, and philosophy at the University of Redlands. Though he initially intended to pursue a career in teaching rather than fine arts, his fascination with color began while developing art lessons for his students. This serendipitous interest led him to study at the Claremont Graduate School, where he earned an M.A. in 1960.
Benjamin became recognized as one of the "Four Abstract Classicists" in a 1959–60 exhibition that served as a West Coast alternative to Abstract Expressionism. His work is characterized by:

Working from his home in Claremont, California, Benjamin developed a unique visual language of interlocking forms. His paintings often feature elongated, zigzag shapes that appear to tuck into one another, creating compositions that seem to exist without beginning or end. His style is described as both intuitive and systematic, focusing on how colors change when juxtaposed. Throughout his career, he balanced his studio practice with a long tenure as a teacher, including a role as a professor and artist-in-residence at Pomona College.
