Mattheus Ignatius van Bree: A Belgian Pioneer of Historical Painting Born: Antwerp, Belgium (1773) Died: 1839, Antwerp, Belgium Early Life and Artistic Training Van Bree's artistic journey began early; he entered the local art academy at just ten years old. One of his key mentors was Petrus Johannes van Regemorter, a significant figure in Antwerp’s art scene. He progressed rapidly within the Academy, becoming
an assistant-professor and establishing his own studio by 1794. A pivotal period occurred when he traveled to Paris in 1797, studying under François-André Vincent.
