The Ethereal Landscapes of Carolyne Kardia

Born in London in 1951, Carolyne Kardia has established herself as a profound weaver of dreams and landscapes, creating works that exist at the delicate intersection of abstract expressionism and meticulous natural observation. Her artistic journey is one of remarkable transformation, moving from the tactile, structural world of sculpture to the luminous, atmospheric realms of painting. After honing her craft at the prestigious St Martin’s School of Art and later earning an MA in sculpture from the Royal College of Art, Kardia’s early career was defined by sculptural installations that responded to architectural spaces. However, it was in 1987 that a pivotal shift occurred, as she began to embrace color and the two-dimensional plane, allowing her to explore the fluid interplay between inner emotion and external beauty.

The soul of Kardia’s work is deeply intertwined with her experiences outside the studio. Her years working as an Occupational Therapist within the Yeovil District Hospital NHS Foundation Trust provided a unique lens through which to view the world, infusing her practice with themes of healing, resilience, and quiet contemplation. This background lends a certain weight to her landscapes; they are not merely vistas, but meditations on the cycles of life and the endurance of nature. Her fascination with the natural world is further enriched by the influence of Impressionist masters such as Monet and Sisley, from whom she inherited a devotion to capturing the fleeting, ephemeral qualities of light and atmosphere.

Technique and Symbolic Language

To encounter a Kardia painting is to experience a sensory layering of texture and light. She employs a distinctive technique that often involves building up acrylic paints mixed with mediums like resin, creating a surface that mimics the ruggedness of stone or the translucent shimmer of water. This meticulous process allows her to achieve a sense of geological depth, where mountainous vistas and coastal scenes seem to emerge from within the canvas itself. Her palette is as dynamic as her subject matter, ranging from the vibrant energy of Blue Embrace to the explosive, hot colors that challenge the eye and dance across the format.

Beyond the physical texture, Kardia’s work is rich with a symbolic vocabulary that speaks to the interconnectedness of all existence. Within her expansive compositions, one often finds recurring motifs such as:

• Spirals and Circles: Representing the eternal cycles of renewal and the rhythmic nature of growth.
• Fragmented Forms: Serving as metaphors for memory, transformation, and the breaking down of boundaries.
• Layered Pigments: Creating a sense of luminosity that evokes the profound mystery of the natural world.

Legacy and Artistic Presence

Kardia’s ability to convey deep emotional resonance through visually striking compositions has earned her significant acclaim across Europe and North America. Her exhibitions have graced prestigious venues such as the Max Planck Institute in Berlin, the Dorset County Museum, and various public spaces in London, including St Pancras Hospital. Whether she is working with plaster installations or large-scale abstract canvases, her practice remains a continuous dialogue between the physical and the spiritual.

Today, living and working in Dorset, Kardia continues to push the boundaries of her medium. Her work stands as a testament to the power of art to act as a bridge between the tangible landscape and the intangible human spirit, leaving an indelible mark on contemporary abstract landscape art through her unique ability to capture the very essence of a moment.
