John Levee: A Life in Abstraction

Early Life and Education

• Born: Los Angeles, United States of America (1924)
• Died: 2017
• John Levee’s journey to becoming an abstract expressionist painter was unique. He initially pursued a Master's degree in Philosophy from UCLA before serving as an aviator during World War II.
• Following the war, he dedicated himself to painting and moved to Montparnasse, Paris, in 1949 – a pivotal decision that shaped his artistic trajectory.
• He formally studied art at the Art Center School in Los Angeles and later at the prestigious Académie Julian in Paris from 1949 to 1951, honing his skills and developing his aesthetic vision.

Artistic Influences and Development

• Early Inspiration: Levee’s early work was profoundly influenced by the burgeoning New York School of Abstract Expressionism. He drew inspiration from masters like Franz Kline, Robert Motherwell, Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Ad Reinhardt, Willem de Kooning, and Philip Guston.
• Evolution of Style: His artistic path wasn’t linear. In the 1960s, he explored hard-edge painting based on geometric abstraction – a departure from his initial expressive style.
• Return to Abstraction: He eventually returned to a more spontaneous abstract expressionist approach, characterized by loose brushwork and the incorporation of collage elements. This shift marked a return to his roots while adding new layers of complexity and texture to his work – often described as lyrical abstraction.

Key Characteristics of His Work

• Abstract Expressionism: Levee’s core style remained rooted in abstract expressionism, emphasizing spontaneous gesture, emotional intensity, and non-representational forms.
• Lyrical Abstraction: His work often evokes a sense of musicality and poetic feeling through its fluid lines, harmonious colors, and dynamic compositions.
• Collage Elements: The integration of collage adds another dimension to his paintings, introducing texture, visual interest, and layers of meaning.

Historical Significance & Legacy

• John Levee represents a fascinating intersection of American artistic influences and European artistic traditions. His decision to work in Paris after the war placed him at the heart of a vibrant international art scene.
• Bridging Movements: His stylistic evolution – from abstract expressionism to geometric abstraction and back again – demonstrates his willingness to experiment and push boundaries, reflecting the broader trends in post-war art.
• A Unique Voice: While influenced by prominent figures, Levee developed a distinctive voice within abstract expressionism, characterized by its lyrical quality and innovative use of collage. His work continues to be appreciated for its expressive power and aesthetic beauty.
