A Life in Amsterdam
Barend Dircksz lived within the walls of Amsterdam during the middle of the sixteenth century. Known to some as Dooven Barent, or Deaf Barent, he moved through a city marked by religious and political shifts. His presence in the local art scene is felt mostly through the lineage he left behind, specifically his son, Dirck Barendsz.
The records of his life are sparse, leaving behind little more than traces of his work and his reputation. He worked in a time when the city was often caught in the middle of intense local conflicts. His hands were busy with the brush during the years leading up to the mid-1500s.
The Brush and the Riot
One particular work from 1535 remains a point of reference for understanding his focus. This painting, which once hung in the Amsterdam City Hall, captured a moment of heavy tension: an Anabaptist riot. It depicted a group of people from a sect that sought to seize control of the city. The scene was described as unsettling to those who viewed it.
The subject matter was tied to a specific day in May 1535, when members of this group occupied the hall. Through his work, the violence and the presence of the mob were recorded for the council to see. This piece was eventually lost to the fire that consumed the city hall in 1652.
Other attributions suggest he may have worked on portraits involving the local militia, such as a depiction of a meal with eight men. These works placed him directly within the social fabric of Amsterdam's civic life.
