Early Life, Family and Training

The story of Hector Viger begins in Argentan, France, where he was born on October 25, 1819. He was the son of Anne Deplanche and Pierre Marin Bruno Viger, a man of property. Life took a turn for the family following the death of his father, which led his mother to marry Jean Louis Duvignau, a pharmacist living in Paris. This move to the capital would eventually place the young man in the heart of the French art world.

It was within the studios of Paris that Hector Viger began to shape his hand and his vision. He sought out the guidance of established masters, studying under Martin Drolling, Paul Delaroche, and Henri Lehmann. These mentors provided the foundation for his technical skill, guiding his early efforts toward the realms of portraiture and history painting. Through this rigorous training, he developed the discipline required to navigate the competitive circles of the French art scene.

Career and Professional Activities

His emergence into the public eye began in 1845, when he first presented his work at the Salon. This period of his life was marked by a growing presence in the Parisian art scene, a momentum that reached a significant peak in 1849. During that year, the Salon featured nine of his portraits, signaling his growing reputation as a painter of character and likeness. His professional standing was further solidified through his involvement in the institutional life of his craft; in 1850, he was admitted to the central committee of artists. He eventually took on the responsibilities of general secretary, a position he held with dedication until his resignation in 1854.

Personal and professional lives often intertwined in the studios of Paris. On December 15, 1853, in Chalon-sur-Saône, he married the artist Pierrette Mariquot. Their union joined two creative spirits, and much of their shared life was spent within the artistic circles of the capital. As his career progressed, he moved from a shared atelier on the rue Oudinot to a more private space at the passage Stanislas. This transition coincided with a deep fascination for the history of the Consulate and the Empire. His devotion to this era was so profound that Napoleon III granted him permission in 1863 to prepare a series of canvases dedicated to the history of the imperial family. This privilege allowed him to reside at the Malmaison, where he lived in a dependency of the château under the patronage of Empress Eugénie until 1870.

Later Years and Death

By the year 1860, the artist sought a change in his surroundings, moving away from the shared studio on the rue Oudinot. That space had been a bustling hub where he worked alongside various painters and sculptors, but he eventually chose to settle in the passage Stanislas. This move marked a new chapter in his life within the heart of Paris, away from the collective energy of the shared atelier.

His residence in the passage Stanislas remained his home until his final days. On March 15, 1879, he passed away at this Parisian domicile. Following his death, he was returned to his roots and buried in the village of Argentan, the place where his life had first begun.
