By 1848, his career moved to Drury Lane, and by 1863, he held the position of Principal Scene Painter at the Haymarket Theatre. In 1879, Richard D'Oyly Carte even commissioned him to provide the London settings for the opera The Pirates of Penzance. O'Connor’s transition from stage sets to fine art exhibitions was marked by a disciplined adherence to detail.
